Unlike many of his contemporaries, C.J. Davis typically does not reference pop culture, but rather hints at historical art from a variety of world cultural perspectives, including Asian calligraphy, Ab Ex and non-objective modernism, and conceptual photography.

Davis' work is not ironic. He believes in the power and ability of paint to still communicate in meaningful ways. In this case, to speak of his own life history and growth as a person, thus functioning as sign posts that mark his own aging and life cycle.
