Unlike many of his contemporaries, C.J. Davis typically does not reference pop culture, but rather hints at historical art from a variety of world cultural perspectives, including Asian calligraphy, Ab Ex and non-objective modernism, and conceptual photography. Davis' work is not ironic. He believes in the power and ability of paint to still communicate in meaningful ways.
