Plush Gallery opens the new year with a three-person exhibition entitled "Slow Cheetah". Featuring new sculpture by C.J. Davis (Dallas), photography by Kat Ryals (Nashville), and abstract paintings by Brian Ryden (Dallas), the show foregrounds the notion of the artists' primal, direct engagement with the subject.

C.J. Davis makes wax and resin cast objects that fit nicely in the palm of your hand. Intimate and varied, these unique castings from the same mold shift minimalism away from the predominant "Marfa" aesthetic and back to a handmade eastern sensibility.

Little Rock native Kat Ryals, who now lives in Nashville, makes archival pigment prints mounted on aluminum, from original tintype photographs of models dressed as various animals. The resulting images are at once vintage and contemporary. The artist just graduated with a B.F.A. in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design.

Brian Ryden makes small to mid-size abstract paintings that defy the rules of composition. Heavy objects float at the top of the picture plane, x's and squiggles cover up the focal point, and general painterly mayhem ensues. He recently completed his undergraduate studies at the University of North Texas.

Poet and co-owner of Cliff Notes Bookstore Carlos Salas, singer-songwriter Erin Machniak, and members of Sleep Whale (formerly Mom) will each perform at the opening.
